Iran uranium enrichment
Iran’s Parliament speaker says the country’s scientists have produced uranium enriched to 60 percent purity. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf made the announcement on Twitter. That comes three days after Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of its plan to enrich uranium at 60 percent. The country began the process on Wednesday. Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has said the measure is in line with Iran’s commitments under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Tehran has said the move is in response to an attack at its Natanz enrichment facility at the weekend. Iran has called the attack nuclear terrorism and blamed Israel.
Rejecting OPCW report
The UN says the world’s largest humanitarian crisis in Yemen is getting even worse, with the pandemic roaring back in recent weeks. UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock said cases are surging in Yemen which already faces a large-scale famine. He said health facilities and hospitals have to turn people away because they lack resources. Lowcock was addressing a UN Security Council meeting. He said tens of thousands of Yemenis are already starving to death, with another five million just a step behind. Lowcock called for urgent action to stop the unfolding catastrophe. Yemen has been devastated by war waged by its northern neighbor Saudi Arabia six years ago.
Mass shooting in US
Police in the US city of Indianapolis say eight people have been killed in a mass shooting there. Authorities are aware of multiple other injured victims in hospitals. One of them is in critical condition. That’s according to the Indianapolis police department. They say a gunman opened fire at a Fedex facility near the city’s international airport late Thursday. Police believe the gunmen died by suicide. They say there is no longer active threat to public safety.
